If you are considering using Lactobacillus acidophilus for Candida albicans, you are one step in the right direction. However, you will need more than just acidophilus if you desire to see your Candida infection vanish with any sort of alacrity. Acidophilus yeast infection alone will help remove Candida albicans from the intestines and the vagina, but will do so slowly. Acidophilus itself does not perform any sort of phagocytosis on yeast fungi; rather, acidophilus indirectly deprives Candida of the basic resources needed for the fungi’s survival.
Candida albicans, a fungus present in approximately 80% of all humans (primarily in the gastrointestinal system or vaginal cavity), is the primary culprit behind yeast infections. Its closely related cousin, Candida glabrata, can also cause a yeast infection, although this is uncommon. This fungus thrives in slightly acidic environments that contain high amounts of sugars, are moist, and rarely come in contact with light. For this reason, the human body’s intestines, mouth, and vagina are the primary locations for yeast infections.
There are three primary ways in which Candida is stymied by Lactobacillus acidophilus yeast infection and other probiotics. The primary way is through direct competition for food; i.e. the chemical substances that can be consumed for energy. Probiotics and Candida all feed on the same things, allowing one to check the growth of the other. When plenty of competitors are present, yeast is simply a commensal organism that is not malicious in nature.
In addition to limiting available resources, acidophilus yeast infection secretes lactic acid; which helps to raise the pH of the environment in which it lives. This is done primarily because acidophilus, whose name literally means “acid lover,” loves environments with lower pH. When enough of lactic acid producing microbiota are present, the pH of an environment can be greatly impacted. Candida albicans on the other hand, prefers less acidic and more mild pH environments. The result is a weakened colony of fungi which are less likely to multiply and infest the area the body where they dwell.
